Inpatient/ Swing Bed Services
W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital has a 25-bed critical access medical care unit. The unit is staffed by Registered Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Your primary care physician or one of our Hospitalists, Dr. Jade Ireland or Dr. Emily Capt will admit and follow you in the hospital.Swing Bed Services or Transitional Care Services are offered under a Medicare program designed to provide skilled care to those needing extra time to recover before returning home. The patient is required to spend 3 nights as an acute care admission in any hospital prior to qualifying for Swing Bed services. The Swing Bed Program allows patients to move from acute care to skilled care within W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital. This ensures the continuity of care by keeping the patient in the same facility with the same physicians, nurses, and therapists. If an emergency arises during the stay of a Swing Bed patient, they are able to return to the acute care setting. The swing bed program is often a step between acute care and home. It is designed to help the patient gain strength in order to go back home and function independently. Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy services are available for all swing bed patients as needed.
Observation Status is where a patient may only be expected to stay in the hospital 24-48 hours. This is a time for the physician to conduct tests and continue to monitor the patient to further evaluate their medical condition. Patients may be discharged home from Observation Status or become a full admission if additional treatment days are recommended.
